Ellie Goulding has stated that she is trying to step away from indie and EDM to become a bonafide pop star. Her voice is among the most unique in pop music today, which has helped carry her through the Lights and Halycon album cycles. Now three years removed from Halycon and building on the success of the sultry "Love Me Like You D. Goudling attempts to break out as a superstar with Delirium.

The entire Delirium album by Ellie Goulding was SLEEEPPPPTTTT ONNNN FOLKS LET ME TELL YOU LIKE THIS WOMAN PUT HER HEART AND SOUL INTO THS PIECE OF GENIUS AND EVERYONE PAID IT DUST I DO NOT CARE THAT IT IS THREE YEARS LATER DELIRIUM DESERVED A GRAMMY OKAY. That album (Delirium. was like not being honest with myself because some of the song I had on that record were very personal and then some were absolutely not personal. But at the same time that record was just so much fun and I think I had to have at some point. Lights and Halcyon were just draining, so emotional, Delirium was like a breath of fresh air to me and I needed it. My next album is all about finding sort of a satisfaction in yourself without someone else.

So it is with Ellie Goulding, who felt obliged to issue an accompanying statement when the release of her third album was announced back in September. Part of me views this album as an experiment – to make a big pop album, she said. I made a conscious decision that I wanted it to be on another level. When the production and the songwriting coalesce, you would have a hard time arguing that Delirium isn’t a winning example of gimlet-eyed mainstream pop: while nothing else approaches the classiness of Love Me Like You Do, the sugary rushes of Holding on for Life and Around U are hard to resist. But there’s an awful lot of it, and the less distinguished moments begin to blur. In fairness, you could imagine virtually everything here on Radio 1, but too much sounds like the stuff you hear on Radio 1 and then struggle to remember a thing about the second it’s over.
