The Burning World was the first Swans album to feature more conventional pop melodies. Gira's lyrics still favored themes of depression, death, greed and despair, but were actually sung, rather than the chanting or shouting typical of earlier material. The Swans Seer DVD was recorded variously in the cities of Melbourne, Australia, Berlin, Germany, Brooklyn, NY, San Francisco, C. LA, C. and Torrance, California. The footage was filmed throughout the swans tour(s) of 2010/2011. The DVD captures swans at the peak of their potential. The film is a work in progress, and will ultimately result in a feature film, filmography of Swans. Directed, filmed and produced by Simon Henwood and Marco Porsia. The Seer took 30 years to make. It’s the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I’ve ever made, been involved in or imagined. But it’s unfinished, like the songs themselves. It’s one frame in a reel.

Although, there is some evolution to be found within. While Filth generally had the feel of a punk rock album, with slightly slower tempos and noise spread all around, Young God is more focused on using drones to create a densely layered atmosphere that reeks of disgust and vileness. It's no idle boast: over two hours, their 12th album covers all points from brutality to beauty in pursuit of epiphanies. The 32-minute title track and "Avatar" exult in extreme dirge terror. But Karen O's radiant vocals on "Song for a Warrior" show a nose for nuance: Gira knows it's light that makes the darkness seem so much richer.
It's just perfect in almost every way from the execution of the concept to the pure power and energy brought forth in the music. Later, with the addition of Jarboe, Gira brought more varied sounds into the mix, melding hooks and spatial variation to the unwavering rhythms.
