In closing, I do have respect for Twin Sister for recording an album and putting themselves out there - I mean, they are unlucky enough for me to have heard them and criticize. I also am aware how easy it is to be a critic sometimes.
Twin Sister remain a wild card on In Heaven, the band’s full-length debut. The group took a while to release its first album, instead issuing a pair of EPs that flitted from style to style with playful abandon.
The most obvious difference between In Heaven and Twin Sister's two previous EPs is that they've cleaned up their sound and tightened their arrangements considerably. Where individual sounds sometimes used to get swallowed in an underlying hiss, instruments now have room to breathe. Guitars sparkle, synthetic drumbeats strike with purpose, and singer Andrea Estella's charming vocal squeak is closer to the fore. Increasing the production value is more than just a technical upgrade- it lets the band open up creatively and try different kinds of new sounds
Twin Sister treat each track as its own individual universe, placing more importance on tracks than some cohesive body. The tightly-wound funk of Bad Street (with its David Byrne-ish lyrical opaqueness and itchy grooves) instantly recalls Talking Heads-a dizzying torrent of organic overdubs locking into a hypnotic trance. On the other hand, the star-gazing ballad Kimmi in a Rice Field could just as well be a cut from an Estella solo album, little more than pulsing programmed beats and slick keys underpinning her airy vocal flights. What makes these guys so great is their willingness to explore a song’s DNA, to fuck around with what makes a track tick. In Heaven is a quirky, forgotten mix-tape you discover wilting underneath your bed, and I (mostly) mean that as a compliment.
Down in Heaven is the third studio album by Twin Peaks, released May 13, 2016 on Grand Jury Music. Twin Peaks recorded the bulk of the album in August 2015 with R. Andrew Humphrey co-producing and John Agnello mixing. Colin Croom joined the band for this record and has since been a permanent member of the group. This album delivered a softer sound, which validates the bands movement from awkward teenage drama to adulthood.
