The All-Star Sessions. The stand-outs are, not surprisingly, John Coltrane as well as (perhaps more surprisingly) Donald Byrd and Hank Mobley. Byrd shows why he had a right to feel confident in his own trumpet artistry even at the same time of Clifford Brown's unapproachable dominance. Byrd was no Clifford, but he lly in these open, informal, quickly assembled sessions (the trademark of practically all jazz recordings on Prestige)-that he was in the "same league" as not just Clifford but Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard.

Philly Joe Jones was born with the name Joseph Rudolph Jones in the city of Philadelphia on July 15, 1923. His mother, a piano teacher taught him the basics in music. He established himself as "Philly Joe" Jones, from the name of the city of his birth, to distinguish himself from the mainstay Count Basie’s drummer, Jo Jones.
