Władziu (or Vladziu) Valentino Liberace (May 16, 1919 – February 4, 1987), best known as Liberace, was an American pianist and vocalist of Polish-Italian origin. Liberace's career lasted four decades. It included concerts, recordings, movies, television and endorsements. During the 1950s–1970s he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world. He lived a life of flamboyant excess both on and off the stage.
Lee, as his friends know him, could hold mass there. But the true monument to the Church of Liberace is the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas, located by no miraculous coincidence in the Liberace Shopping Plaza. So I told the bandleader to call me anything but Liberace, and he came up with Walter Busterkeys. In 1939, Liberace the concert pianist worked a bit of Busterkeys into his classical repertoire. At a recital in La Crosse, Wisconsin, he played Three Little Fishes as an encore –– winking, smiling, emoting throughout.
Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine. Larger-than-life pianist whose talent and charm made him an American icon for flamboyance and glittering excess. A Brand New Me. Liberace.
