Drumming is a piece by minimalist composer Steve Reich, dating from 1970–1971. Reich began composition of the work after a short visit to Ghana and observing music and musical ensembles there, especially under the Anlo Ewe master drummer Gideon Alorwoyie. His visit was cut short after contracting malaria. K. Robert Schwarz describes the work as "minimalism's first masterpiece.

Complete your Steve Reich collection. Don't let the length of the pieces scare you, you will want to listen to every minute. Part I" of "Drumming" and "Six Pianos" are so hypnotic and so engaging and enthralling in their complexity and beauty that like I said, the quite drastic lengths of each (each around 25 mins) are no problem in enduring. Certainly an essential work for any fan of /or early avant garde/electronic music.

The version recorded for Elektra/Nonesuch in 1987 ranks among Reich's masterpieces. The 60-minute continuous work features one basic rhythm pattern. Throughout four segued movements it is multiplied, played in canon on various percussion instruments. Part I" is for four pairs of tuned bongo drums; "Part II" for three marimbas (played by nine players) and two singers mimicking the sound of marimbas; "Part III" for three glockenspiels, piccolo, and whistling (played by Reich himself); "Part IV" for all previous instruments, including voices.

Who’s Steve Reich? I suppose everyone has a moment of discovery of something that hits him or her like this (minus the large student). I listened for the next 15-or-so minutes, rapt. The piece was announced as Six Pianos on the just-released 3-record Deutsche Grammophone set called Drumming, and as soon as I could, I was in Philly and hunting for it. I can even remember when I found it – it was a major score. And here it was, fully formed, in Reich’s album. The piece Drumming, played out over 4 LP sides, is a study in phase music, in which each of the sections (tuned bongos; marimbas and women’s voices; glockenspiels, whistler and piccolo), featuring gradually increasing numbers of players, articulates the pattern, until by the 4th section, it’s all there.
