Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler was written between 1908 and 1909, and was the last symphony that he completed. It is actually his tenth symphony, as Mahler gave no ordinal number to his symphony with voices Das Lied von der Erde. A typical performance takes about 75 to 90 minutes. Otto Klemperer knew Mahler and Mahler recommended him for his first conducting position years before the First World War. Klemperer's monumentally dramatic late 1960s EMI recording of Mahler 9 has been reissued several times on CD by EMI, but every version I've heard (and I own them all) sounds harshly two dimensional. Working from an EMI 15 ips tape, HDTT's CD provides a much more realistic, three dimensional experience, offering both warmth and sonic detail. Whilst all of them demand attention it is those of the Resurrection Symphony (No. 2), Symphony No. 9 and Das Lied von der Erde in particular that have always been regarded as of the highest rank and in their latest remasterings literally defy their age.
