There's little question that the Pogues were a seminal band, blessed with great musicians, and led by Shane MacGowan, a songwriter of major vision and talent. This was apparent on their initial Stiff singles but it truly blazed on their Elvis Costello-produced second studio album, Rum Sodomy & the Lash, a record that artfully walked the razor's edge between Irish traditionalism and venomous, working-class punk. Though they became more accomplished in later albums, they never strayed from this template
The Pogues were one of the unlikliest pop bands of the 80s, with their mad fusion of Irish folk and London punk, but their musical talent, and the lyrical brilliance of frontman Shane MacGowan, also made them one of the best. This compilation puts together (virtually) all their finest moments on one top value CD, from Latin carnival freakout 'Fiesta' to the desolate romance of 'A Pair of Brown Eyes', from the urban squalor of 'The Old Main Drag' to the blissed out sun-kissed tranquility of 'Summer in Siam'. This album is truly the best of the Pogues. If you've heard a song you like from this band it's probably on this album. I bought it as a bit of a party album and it delivers this in spades. I wouldn't sit still in a dark room to listen on my own but that's not what the Pogues are about. This is music for a good time and I'm pleased I bought it.

The very best Christmas song is, of course, also the only one to involve someone being called an old slut on junk. Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is a glorious drunken hymn to broken dreams and bitterly cold recriminations. In the last quarter of a century it’s become rightfully regarded as a classic. However, when it was first released in 1987 it didn’t even take the Christmas number one slot.
