Performer: On his debut album, New Boots and Panties!!, Dury's music is at its best, and even that is a bizarrely uneven fusion of pub rock, punk rock, and disco. Still, Dury's off-kilter charm and irrepressible energy make the album gel, with the disco pulse of "Wake Up and Make Love with Me" making perfect sense next to the gentle tribute "Sweet Gene Vincent," the roaring punk of "Blockheads," and the revamped music hall of "Billericay Dickie" and "My Old Ma.

Ian Dury & The Blockheads Format: Vinyl. Audio CD, Import, January 1, 2017. New Boots and Panties. One of those records where every song is great. Amazing how things can come together so well at a particular point in time, when an artist can put magic down on vinyl. Dury never again was able to pull off a record as complete as this, but one great record is enough when its this good. The demos are very good and well worth a listen.
New Boots and Panties!! (Stiff SEEZ 4) is not an album to be recommended to all Guardian readers, even if they have braved the Sex Pistols, but it contains some remarkable writing – particularly if you get past the earthy romanticism of the opening (and not the best) track, Wake Up And Make Love With Me. I admire him for the way he throws himself full tilt into his emotions, using a backdrop as squalid as the worst of the East End for songs of unashamed sexuality, admiration or hate. They still stand up well against the new wave opposition (though much punk is moving mainstream so fast that the term is becoming meaningless).
