Ernani CD, Live, Classical. I enjoyed this recording. The highlights are well chosen (except that they omit the recit/aria for Ernani involarmi. The cabaletta is included. These are solid singers. They are probably not my first choices for any of the roles but I enjoyed the performance non the less. Sass was my principle reason for acquiring the disc and she is very good. Miller has a light voice for Don Carlo but he sings lyrically so he is effective. He doesn't try to inflate the voice as some baritones do. Kovacs is strong and he has the right sound for Silva.

Giorgio Lamberti, Lajos Miller, Kolos Kováts, Sylvia Sass; Hungarian State Opera Chorus & Orchestra/Lamberto Gardelli. Ernani, first performed at La Fenice in 1844, was Verdi’s fifth opera and the one which brought him international recognition. This recording was originally issued by Hungaroton on LP in 1982 and it supplements the eight early Verdi operas recorded under Gardelli for Philips. The then white-hot soprano Sylvia Sass is the Elvira, though Sass has not maintained the international career momentum and prominence which she had over a decade ago when, with her cloudy, vibrant sound and intense stage presence, she was labelled ‘the new Callas’. Gardelli revels in the drama and musical potency of this.

Lamberto Gardelli (8 November 1915 – 17 July 1998) was a Swedish conductor of Italian birth, particularly associated with the Italian opera repertory, especially the works of Giuseppe Verdi. Born in Venice, Italy, Gardelli studied with Amilcare Zanella and Adriano Ariani at the Liceo Musicale Rossini in Pesaro, and later at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He started his career as a pianist (appearing in public at the age of eight) and double-bass player in Italy.
