Cry Baby" is a song originally recorded by Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters, in 1963, and later recorded by rock singer Janis Joplin in 1970. Bert Berns wrote the song with Jerry Ragovoy. Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters recorded it for the United Artists record label. It topped the R&B chart and went to on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963, and paved the way for soul hits by Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding later in the decade
I immediately fell in love with every song on the album, as we all did. Garnett Mims sang that wonderful blend of soul and rhythm and blues, reminding me of other well-known and loved artists such as Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. I instantly fell in love with his rendition of "Cry Baby", which was also a well-known song wailed by the unique Janis Joplin. I could not believe I had never heard of this man before.
Garnet Mimms' debut album, Cry Baby and 11 Other Hits, was a well-above-average effort for soul LPs of the era. Besides the title smash, it featured solid material that married Mimms' gospel feel with uptown New York soul production; "Anytime You Want Me," "Wanting You," and "Baby Don't You Weep" were some of his finest songs. It's been reissued in its entirety, along with 14 other cuts, on the British CD Cry Baby/Warm and Soulful; most of the songs are on the domestic compilation The Best of Garnet Mimms.
