Hark! The Village Wait is the debut album by the British folk rock band Steeleye Span, first released in 1970. It is the only album to feature the original lineup of the band as they broke up and reformed with an altered membership immediately after its release, without ever having performed live. Therefore, it is one of only two Steeleye Span studio albums to feature two female vocalists (Maddy Prior and Gay Woods), the other being Time (1996).

Hark! The Village Wait. Hark! The Village Wait Tracklist. 3. Fisherman's Wife Lyrics.
The Village Wait was the sole Steeleye Span album to feature both the talents of female singers Maddy Prior and Gay Woods. The Woods couple would be leaving the group soon after the completition of the recordings for this LP. The sound is quite traditional, of course, but it does include some drumming provided by Dave mattacks (Fairport Convention) and Gary Conway (future member of Fotheringay and The Pentangle). Next to 'Hark! The Village Wait', one will find Steeleye Span would also deliver a real great album with 'Below the Salt', which I myself would prefer by an inch. Great folkrock, great seventies vibe and sound, and beautifull replayvalue due to its charming effect on the livingroom. The big three and a halve it is.

The sound is fully electric here (with superb playing on the epic "Lowlands of Holland"), if not as aggressive or well crafted as later albums - Hart, Hutchings, and Woods comprise a good core band, and Gerry Conway and Fairport Convention 's Dave Mattacks sit in on drums.

They eventually would tour in the . opening for bands like Jethro Tull. People like David Bowie and Peter Sellers would make guest appearances on their albums. But that was years after the release of this album-their first-"Hark! The Village Wait. When Ashley Hutchings left Fairport, he decided to form a band that would focus primarily on traditional material.
