The album seems the work of a transformed woman - someone who has put aside much of the anger and confusion that fueled her earlier songs and has found a hard-earned measure of spiritual happiness. It opens with a prayer for strength and wisdom and closes with another, offering a brave, fearful thanks for equanimity. Indeed, Sinéad O’Connor seems to comprehend truths that, in a better world, one might not need to know. She realizes that love too often ends in betrayal; that there are forces in the world willing to silence or kill you for your differences; and that you may never receive some of the things you need most in this life - or that you can get them and still have your heart broken. I have all that I requested/And I do not want what I haven’t got. It’s a bid to find a way to accept what can’t be changed, to make peace with loss and limitation and to win the courage to live and love.
I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got became Sinéad O'Connor's popular breakthrough on the strength of the stunning Prince cover "Nothing Compares 2 U," which topped the pop charts for a month. But even its remarkable intimacy wasn't adequate preparation for the harrowing confessionals that composed the majority of the album.

Has it really been almost 20 years since the release of Sinéad’s I Don’t Want What I Haven’t Got? I was 19 years old, just out of high school and started my extended run at a local junior college in San Antonio, Texas. Sinéad herself was only twenty four when she gave birth to I Don’t Want with her husband, drummer John Reynolds. Most of the tracks were recorded with very few takes. The record company initially rejected the record because in their words it sounded like `. eading somebody’s diaries. The personal nature of I Don’t Want is what made Sinéad an international phenomenon
