Malo's music was popular in Central and South America, especially the songs "Chevere", "Nena", "Pana", "Cafe", and "Oye Mama". After the release of their first album, many of Malo's original band members left the group in a rift widely popularized in the media. Currently Malo continues to perform to sellout crowds under the leadership of Arcelio Garcia J. who took over the band in the late 1970s.

Saint-Malo is a historic French port in Brittany on the Channel coast. The walled city had a long history of piracy, earning much wealth from local extortion and overseas adventures. In 1944, the Allies heavily bombarded Saint-Malo, mistaking it for a major enemy base. Today it is a popular tourist centre, with a ferry terminal serving Portsmouth, Jersey, Guernsey and Poole.

The music performed was titles from a wide range of western movies and mafia movies reflecting different perspectives on an Italian-American movie and film music style. Featured composers were Ennio Morricone, Bernard Herrmann, Nino Rota and Sonny Bono with music from films by Sergio Leone, Quentin Tarantino, Brian DePalma and Francis Ford Coppola.

Folklore contends that Saint Malo may have the first Filipino settlement in Louisiana and possibly the first Asian settlement. Oral histories claim St. Malo was established in 1763 by deserters from Spanish ships during the Manila Galleon trade, in what became St. Bernard Parish (then part of Spanish Louisiana), on the shore of Lake Borgne. St. Malo was on a waterway called Saint Malo Bayou, about 5 miles (. km) east of the fishing village of Shell Beach.
