A spike of emulation suicides after a widely publicized suicide is known as the Werther effect, following Goethe's novel The Sorrows of Young Werther.
The Suicide by Cop trope as used in popular culture. The Up to Eleven variant of this trope is Suicide by State, in which the person commits a crime which bears the death penalty and gets executed. He wants Tenma to kill him because it would mean making him admit that all life is not equal, and the implication is that he's so far gone that the only way he feels he can die is by making another person have to do it. MW: Michio Yuki can provoke anyone to kill him, including Garai.
Suicide by cop can happen in several ways. The most common way through criminal intervention. This occurs when someone commits a major crime, then decides that they would rather die than get caught when confronted by officers. Disturbed intervention is the second most common way these incidents occur. This happens when the cops are called in to intervene in a particular situation, such as a suicide attempt, domestic dispute, or must deal with someone who is resistant to intervention due to substance abuse or mental illness. Direct confrontation, where the attack is pre-planned to lead to death, is much less common.
There are a variety of religious views on suicide. Suicides are frowned upon and buried in a separate part of a Jewish cemetery, and may not receive certain mourning rites. In practice, every means is used to excuse suicide-usually by determining either that the suicide itself proves that the person was not in their right mind, or that the person committing suicide must have repented after performing the deadly act but shortly before death occurred.
Suicide by cop is a colloquial term used to describe an unsub's act of forcing Law Enforcement officials to shoot or otherwise kill them. This act is almost invariably the fate of all rampage killers. The killer, having reached a point of no return, will prefer his/her own death over indefinite incarceration or. Suicides by cop, as well as attempts at suicide by cop, have been occasionally featured in Criminal Minds.
